Reigning Confederations Cup champions Brazil have been grouped with Portugal and Ivory Coast in the draw announced in Cape Town on Friday evening. Fabio Capello’s England have been given a relatively easy group, with the United States, Algeria and Slovenia their opponents in Group C.

World Cup 2006 hosts Germany have been drawn in a tough group with Australia, Serbia and Ghana while the Netherlands, Japan, Denmark and Cameroon constitute another competitive group.

Hosts South Africa are with Mexico, Uruguay and France in Group A, and the home fans’ hopes of seeing their team progress to the knockout stages would have taken a severe beating after seeing them in this group. Defending champions Italy also seem to have an easy path to the last sixteen with Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia for company in Group F.
