Macheda signs new contract

Italian wonderkid Federico Macheda has signed a new contract that will see him stay at Manchester United till 2014. The teenager, who joined the Red Devils from Lazio shortly before his sixteenth birthday, burst on to the scene towards the end of last season with crucial goals against Aston Villa and Sunderland.

Macheda is yet to play a league match this season, but made an appearance in United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter finals of the Carling Cup. The Rome born striker expressed delight at having put pen to paper a contract extension, and added he was hopeful that more first team opportunities would come his way.

Macheda has played for Italy at U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-21 levels. He did not figure in the 2009 UEFA U-21 Championships though.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was also happy at having secured the future of one of his key youngsters. Sir Alex expressed hope that Macheda would continue developing in the next few years and become a more complete player.
